Ghana’s ongoing power challenges are still affecting many communities, but the situation is not the same everywhere. According to recent remarks from officials, some areas have enjoyed stable electricity for years, while others continue to deal with frequent outages.
Uneven Power Supply Across Communities
In places like Dansoman and Awudome, some residents say they have not experienced power cuts for up to two years. But areas such as Taiman, Tabukope, Abrekomwa, and Gulf City are facing persistent outages.
The main issue in these affected areas is transformer overload and faults, not a nationwide shortage of power.
The Akosombo Challenge
Efforts are underway to restore lost capacity from the Akosombo Dam, which previously supplied about 1,200 megawatts. Restoring this power is key to improving stability across the country.
Why There’s No Fixed “Dumsor” Timetable
Many people are asking for a clear timetable for outages, but officials say that’s not always possible.
There are two main types of outages:
Planned outages
These happen during maintenance or upgrades. In such cases, authorities give notice and provide schedules. For example, areas undergoing transformer upgrades receive specific timelines.
Unplanned outages
These are caused by sudden issues like transformer overloads. Since they depend on electricity demand, they cannot be predicted. When demand spikes, systems may trip without warning.
What’s Being Done
The government and power agencies say they are:
Replacing and upgrading faulty transformers
Working in phases across different regions
Deploying maintenance teams to respond quickly when faults occur
However, they admit that not all problems can be fixed at once, so some areas will continue to experience outages until upgrades reach them.
